Marquita Smith-Straus is a perinatal social worker, full-spectrum Doula, trained Midwife, and Death Doula. Marquita is passionate about empowering people to show up authentically, while fiercely advocating for those navigating spaces that are not traditionally occupied by people of color.  Tracy L. Stewart, MA, MEd is mindfulness-based mental health therapist, wellness educator, end of life care provider, and healing justice activist in Seattle, WA.

She sees her role in community as working to create supportive, safe space for BIPoC folks in discovering their gifts through mindfulness practice and social justice awareness. Her cup is filled by the outside places, silly friends with microphones, passion for life, and folks sharing their good medicine with each other. Tracy co-founded Gathering Roots Wellness with Nikki Chau, with the intention of creating a place where that burden can be released, people can fill their cups with joyful learning and the beauty of the Earth.

“My focus is learning to be a good elder in order to support those out in the community fighting for all us to BE. In my work, I see a lot of suffering of Black and brown people who are worn from fighting to be their full selves in all spaces."

Consider Joining the Teaching Crew!

If you have a course, workshop, or panel that you would like to collaborate on or share with A Sacred Passing, we are excited to meet you!

There are a few requirements for new class submissions:

1) Submit your course here to the ASP Teaching Crew Form Here. Seasonally, the board will review the content of the submitted curriculums for alignment with our vision for inclusive death care education. After the board review, we'll invite teachers to be in dialogue about the offering, and then the course will be promoted through ASP.

2) For all teachers, we ask that a class space be reserved for at least two current ASP instructors or board to learn and grow an understanding of your teaching style and practice.

3) All are asked to make classes financially accessible with at least three sliding-scale payment options, the price of the course/workshop is set by each instructor.

When teaching with the ASP crew, there are benefits for those who are helping to sustain our education program. ASP invites teachers to give back 10% - 30% of each attendee ticket to support our organizational sustainability. In return, our crew offers classroom and electronic meeting space, support to find and coordinate in-person space (Seattle), shares administrative responsibilities, supports with the creation of materials spread the word, and more!
