You Can Die Here.

Request A Room Offer A Room

In Washington state, residents have choices in their end-of-life options.  Even with that choice, access to exercising one's choice can be limited by care facilities or support networks. A goal of A Sacred Passing is to increase access to deathcare, and one way we do that is through A Place to Die.

Quick Facts:

  • There is no cost for the guest, family, or insurance.
  • We are all community care volunteers.
  • Asphodel House is where we care for most VSED guests, and VSED care often requires no less than two weeks of planning.
  • Same-day care is sometimes possible for MAiD guests.
  • Hospital beds and basic care supplies are available at the house.
  • Delightfully personalized care is our specialty - when desired, i.e., leopard robe, fun sheets, only music from a specific playlist.
  • Hospice is a preferred care partner when possible.
  • A guest may come alone or bring other well-behaved people and pets.
  • The house has a wheelchair ramp, and wakes are possible after death.
  • We work very hard to honor the autonomy and accommodate and prioritize each guest's wishes and preferences.
  • Our care softens sharp edges. Experienced volunteers, deathcare practitioners, and students in training provide community care. We work with hospices, physicians, social workers, nurses, hospitals, and people who care for humans at the end of life.

We create spaces where people can access their right to choice in a comfortable and caring setting. Hospice teams, Palliative Care Departments, and other intentional groups: to arrange a Zoom Q&A or an in-person visit for your team, please reach out to aplacetodie@asacredpassing.org

A Place to Die

A Place to Die is a program which has been created for increasing access to these options at no cost to the dying person. A Place to Die gives community members access to education, death doula care, and a physical place where any person can stay while exercising their end of life choice with medical aid in dying (MAID) or voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED).

A Continuously Growing Web of Care

What is A Place to Die?

In Washington state, residents have choice in their end of life options. However, even with that choice, access to exercising one's choice can be limited by care facilities or support network.

Why is A Place to Die Necessary?

Not everyone has a safe and supportive space to exercise their choice to use Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) and Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking (VSED). Some hospitals, hospice facilities, care homes and living centers have rules that do not support a person exercising their legal right to choose. Some folx choose not to exercise these rights in their home, a home of a friend or family member, for a variety of reasons, none of which we question. We are here to connect community.

How do I access A Place to Die?

Select the option below to "Request a Room" under the heading Seeking a Space. You will be able to say if you are seeking, offering or supporting. Complete the form with all of the information you can. If you need assistance completing the form, please call 206-494-0023.

After you complete the form, a coordinator will reach out to you to ask for more details of your situation, explain options, answer questions, and hopefully match you with a community care home offering a space to die.
